Soft magnetic materials are indispensable to modern technology. In terms of tonnage and economic value they dwarf hard magnetic materials. The demand for these materials will continue to grow especially in renewable energy production and electric vehicles. Fortunately, the key ingredient in all soft magnetic materials is iron, so that apart from some specialist nickel-iron and iron-cobalt alloys, there should not be significant issues with raw material availability. This presentation will describe existing materials and parts production techniques, the prospects for future improvements in the materials, and conclude with some thoughts on additive manufacturing of soft magnetic components.
