Measurement Technologies for Soft and Hard Magnetic Materials Used in Automotive Applications

Mechanical stress, high temperature and harmonic distortion of the excitation voltage can significantly influence magnetic properties of soft and hard magnetic materials used in automotive applications. The residual stress remaining in the motor laminations after manufacturing processes, such as punching, housing shrink fitting and winding, has a detrimental effect on power loss of stator cores resulting in reduced efficiency and impaired performance. Moreover, heat generated within the electrical machines additionally affects the energy loss in electrical steel stacks and permanent magnets. Finally, the harmonic distortion due to switching in motor power electronics increases the loss in motor steel laminations which can be more than 20% higher than under sinusoidal excitation. New technologies can be used for evaluation of production quality, as well as in the design process and material selection for electric drive and automotive applications.
