Recent development in heavy rare earth free hot deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets

Given the expected increase in demand for transportation electrification, nobody would argue the importance of a stable supply of high performance Nd-Fe-B magnets. With its potential higher coercivity without the use of heavy rare earth elements, the hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets Daido Steel Group developed have been attracting much attention in academia, but have also been used in the traction motors of xEVs.

In this presentation, recent technology development is outlined, including the enhancement of magnetic performance with ultra-fine crystalline microstructure, significant improvement of coercivity using grain boundary infiltration, as well as the control of orientation texture to enable higher degree of freedom in the magnetic circuit designs.
